The Importance and Relevance of PPST to Technology for Teaching and Learning

The Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers or PPST, which is built on NCBTS, complements the reform initiatives on teacher quality from pre-service education to in-service training. It articulates what constitutes teacher quality in the K to 12 Reform through well-defined domains, strands, and indicators that provide measures of professional learning, competent practice, and effective engagement. This set of standards makes explicit what teachers should know, be able to do and value to achieve competence, improved student learning outcomes, and eventually quality education. It is founded on teaching philosophies of learner-contentedness, lifelong learning, and inclusive/inclusiveness, among others. The professional standards, therefore, become a public statement of professional accountability that can help teachers reflect on and assess their own practices as they aspire for personal growth and professional development.

The standards describe the expectations of teachers’ increasing levels of knowledge, practice and professional engagement. At the same time, the standards allow for teachers’ growing understanding, applied with increasing sophistication across a broader and more complex range of teaching/learning situations.

Moreover, a teacher should be equipped with the skills and knowledge when it comes to technology. Since, the world is setting its new trends into new technologies everyday. Additionally, the classrooms of today is not teacher-centered approached. It is more on learner-centered, were in learners are molded through self learning and teacher serves as a facilitator inside the classroom.

So, how will the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers or PPST important or relevant to the technology for teaching and learning? The PPST will relate to technology for teaching and learning since the standard of being a teacher was set into high standards. The teacher has now the capacity to handle the new the curriculum since they are equipped and knowledgeable in different aspect of technology.

And lastly, it is important especially that today’s curriculum is completely changed and set a high new standards for the learners. This program was released to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship. Hence, the PPST was established to constitutes to the reform of the curriculum.
